Dihydroberberine SR features GlucoVantage® dihydroberberine, a highly bioavailable metabolite of berberine. The SmartMatrix™ sustained-release tablet promotes the absorption of dihydroberberine over 5 to 7 hours.* 

Dihydroberberine is more lipophilic (fat-soluble) than berberine and doesn’t require conversion by gut bacteria for absorption. This allows it to cross the intestinal wall much more easily. Once absorbed, dihydroberberine quickly converts back to berberine in the bloodstream, where it exerts its biological effects (1). As a result, oral dihydroberberine achieves much higher blood levels of berberine than taking berberine itself (2). 

The ability of dihydroberberine to help regulate blood glucose is attributed to several actions, including helping to inhibit oxidation in the mitochondria, stimulate glycolysis, and activate the AMPK pathway that transports glucose into peripheral tissues (3). 

Dihydroberberine has been shown to combat oxidative and nitrosative (O/N) stress (4). This antioxidant capacity supports cellular health, helps maintain a healthy inflammatory response, and promotes healthy aging. 

Directions: As a dietary supplement for adults, take one (1) tablet, twice daily with food, or as directed by your healthcare professional. 

Clinical research indicates berberine supports cardiometabolic health; however, the high doses needed can cause safety and tolerance issues. Dihydroberberine helps overcome these challenges for optimal patient compliance. 

• Glycemic Control. A meta-analysis of randomized controlled clinical trials indicates berberine is significantly more effective in supporting glycemic balance than placebo (5). 
• Cholesterol & Lipid Balance. Clinical research indicates berberine is effective in supporting cholesterol and lipid balance (6,7). A 2017 consensus-based position statement of an international panel of lipid experts provides clinical recommendations for the use of berberine to support cholesterol and lipid balance, recommending dosages in the range of 500-1,500 mg/day (8). 
• Blood Pressure. Randomized controlled trials indicate berberine has a positive effect on blood pressure, suggesting supplementation may help maintain blood pressure in the normal range (5). 
• Tolerance. Effective doses of berberine are associated with dose-dependent side effects, most notably digestive upset, which may lead some sensitive individuals to discontinue use. 
• Safety. Berberine has been reported to interact with several clinically important drugs (i.e., cisplatin, cyclosporin-A, doxorubicin, fluconazole, hydroxy-camptothecine, L-DOPA, tetrandine, warfarin, thiopental, β-lactam antibiotics) resulting in either antagonistic or synergistic effects (9).
